Happy Halloween!
So it turns out that my big Halloween weekend was last weekend. I went to a dance on Friday night and had a small get-together last night. Today I wandered about downtown Fredericksburg with my boyfriend, visiting a cat-themed store (that has like, five actual cats wandering about in it and I got to scritch and pet some of them), a coffee shop, and a bookstore, and tonight I’ll be having dinner with some friends. Not a big party scene, but a pretty good weekend nonetheless.
I also started a hat because it occurs to me I don’t have to finish the sweater I was working on until December 9th, so I have some time and I wanted to knit something for ME. And I don’t have enough hats.
It’s Brambles from the most recent Knitty. I’m using some teal Cascade 220 that I picked up a while back. I used it for another small project (a peacock for a bird swap), so I should have enough but it might be close.
The hat is working up pretty quickly, and I’m thrilled how it’s coming out. I can’t wait to block and wear it. : )
I finished a hat for an Ongoing Wish Swap claim. For those who aren’t familiar with OWS, it’s basically a chain swap–person A posts a listC B makes something on that list and posts their list; C makes something from B’s list and posts their list. The swap on Craftster is on it’s 62nd round (there’s a new round every month), so it’s been going on forever. I’ve been participating off and on for about a year and a half, and it’s definitely my favorite swap. Usually, you know exactly what to expect.
In this case, I claimed Burgz for a Vortex hat:
Pattern: Vortex, from Knitty
Yarn: Lion Brand Lion Wool (in Deep Teal) and Plymouth Galway (in grey)
Needles: US 9/6 mm I think. Possibly 6.5mm.
Mods: None. Knit as written.
So let me tell you about this hat. It’s… odd, to say the least. I for one could not pull it off even a little bit. It is not my style. The regular, non-point version? Sure. Yeah. This? Not so much.
But it’s not for me. It’s for Burgz, who specifically requested it via her OWS list. And even though the pattern was kind of a pain in the ass and I was glued to it for the entire construction of the hat, a hat is a pretty small thing so it worked up quickly and came out mostly how it’s supposed to.
Anyway, I hope Burgz likes it!
So my first week at school has been pretty busy, hence the lack of posting. That isn’t to say I haven’t been crafting–I have definitely been crafting. And organizing. My craft area sort of looks organized (which if you know me at all is something of an accomplishment). I’ve been busy knitting for swaps (and as I mentioned before, I started a sweater for me). I recently finished two items for an OWS claim:
Pattern: Mary Jane Slippers for what seems like the hundreth time.
Yarn: Vintage wool, which I’m trying desperately to use up since I’m not crazy about it.
Hook: 3.75 mm (f)
Mods: I don’t think any.
I’ve made this pattern so many times I sometimes forgot it’s not my pattern. I don’t usually repeat patterns and certainly not to the degree of this one, so I sometimes forget I’m not just makin’ it up. : )
Pattern: None; I knit the brim flat and picked up stitches for the top part of the hat.
Yarn: More of that vintage wool. I’m down to less than 50g I think.
Needle: US 7/4.5 mm
This yarn frustrates me (nothing wrong with it; I just don’t like the color and I had a lot of it), but I like how the hat came out. It’s cute. I love seed stitch. : ) Not much to say about it; it was pretty easy to make.
In other crafting news, I recently received a crap ton of fabric from an OWS claim, but I’m waiting on one more OWS package, so I’ll just show you all at once. I’m also knitting up some swatches for a WWYF swap (one in linen stitch ❤ and one in stockinette) for which I received a lovely shawl pin. I'll show you that when I show you the OWS stuff. I also recently finished a thing for a friend's birthday, which I will try to show you on Monday. It's super cute.
All right guys, I finally finished and sent my swap package for the Yarnie vs. Sewists swap on Craftster. My partner was MissDolly, and we decided to craft each other’s lists (we each had five items). Here is everything I made for MissDolly (and warning–the last one is probably NSFW).
Pattern: None, it’s a top-down hat.
Yarn: Grants Knitting Worsted, the vintage wool I’m slowly working through.
Needles: US 7/4.5 mm
I like how this came out. It’s not overly complicated and the ears and a little crooked but it’s cute. And comfy.
Pattern: The Mary Jane Slippers I’ve made three pairs of now.
Hook: H8/5 mm
Yarn: Cascade 220 (grey) and Ella Rae Classic (blue)
Mods: None, I think. Crocheted as written.
Every time I make these, I like them more. One of these days I’ll make a pair for myself. In the mean time, I’ll continue making them for swap cause they’re SO FAST and they’re a great use of random wool or acrylic that I have lounging about in the stash. Also, great use for buttons I only have two of.
I did do something different for this pair though:
A while back, I picked up a couple of shelf liners/placemats (one of those things) at Goodwill. They’re kind of sticky, and I figured they’d be good for sewing to slipper bottoms so the slippers aren’t so dangerous and so they last longer (since pure wool crocheted loosely that gets stepped on a lot probably won’t last very long).
Pattern: Fetching by Cheryl Niamath, from Knitty
Yarn: Almost EXACTLY one skein of Knit Picks Comfy in Marlin (I had about three yards left)
Needles: US 6/4 mm Susan Bates dpns
Mods: None? Though next time I would do a little shaping and a different thumb. I hate afterthought thumbs.
I think these are cute. I REALLY love the cabled wrist, and I will definitely be working that into a future pair of fingerless (or fingered) mitts or gloves. It snugs up nicely and it’s quite pretty. I don’t especially care for the top (it flairs out a little) or, as I said, the lack of shaping (there’s not enough ribbing for that) and a regular mitten thumb (have I mentioned I dislike afterthought thumbs? Cause I do). I probably won’t make these for myself, but they were fun and fast to make for the swap, and I’m pleased I used up the last lingering ball of Comfy. (Now I have to order more.)

Yarn: Lamb’s Pride (in Kiwi), Lion Wool (in Purple), and some yarn from a thrift store sweater I frogged
Hook: Uh… G maybe? For amigurumi, I generally just use whatever hook I pull out first. I think I used a 3.75 mm hook.
Guys, I love this rabbit. LOVE. I was convinced it was going to come out horribly, and then I put it all together, and it’s AMAZING. I’m seriously considering making another for myself to sit on my desk and be cute and nerdy. His little glasses (scraps of jersey I glued on) are adorable. LOVE.
WARNING: This next one is NSFW or kids. Though you should expect this sort of thing from time to time since the name of my blog is “Adulterous Whores Club.” Just sayin’.
Pattern: Adult Lip Balm Cozy
Hook: Uh… 3.75 mm?
Yarn: Wool from a thrift store sweater.
Mods: Made adjustments for thicker yarn, stuffed it fully instead of leaving space for chapstick.
…Yeah. It was fun to make, and she wanted one, so I obliged. You know you want one too.
Today, I’ve got one small FO to show you and a couple of wip’s. First, the FO:
Pattern: None, just a square of linen stitch
Yarn: Handspun Miss Babs BFL
Needles: US 5/3.75 mm
My lining is sort of shoddy and it’s not wide enough, but it fits my phone and ID card fairly easily, and that’s what I use it for. Plus I get to look at my pretty pretty handspun even when it’s not cold enough for Saroyan. : )
Currently, I’m working on a hat that will probably be finished today or tomorrow. Currently, it looks like this:

Almost done. I’m using the same orange vintage Grants Wool I’ve had for ages and am slowly making my way through. The color is a lot less obnoxious than the bright orange it originally was, but I still don’t love it. This hat is for a swap. The swap is called “Yarnies Vs. Sewers” and is partnered based on craft, a yarnie (spinner/knitter/crocheter) with a sewer. Sign ups aren’t technically over until next week, but another person and I decided that we needed to be partnered based on the (probably rude) thing I wanted to make for someone. So we insisted, and the mod complied, and we’ve already gotten started (even though the send out isn’t until Mary). I’m making a total of five things, none particularly complicated, and will probably be finished quite early.
I am also sort of working on spinning this:
Or half of it anyway. I got 8 oz. of Crown Mountain Farms superwash merino in a Ravelry destash, and I’m spinning 4 oz. into what will hopefully be a 2 ply worsted that I’ll knit into the yoke of a sweater.
Also, I am waiting on some mail–an OWS swap which I am incredibly excited to receive, and some roving I ordered which is RIDICULOUSLY AWESOME and gorgeous, and I’ll definitely be showing it off here. I expect to get both things on Monday or Tuesday, so stay tuned for that.
I’ve written up and had tested the Cabled Snow Hat, and it is available for purchase through Ravelry. There will be more on the Ravelympics sweater on Wednesday, but for the moment, let’s hear a word from our sponsors (i.e., me):

I’ve been knitting lots of small things lately, so it seems like every post recently has been a FO post. As such, here’s another small thing I finished:
Pattern: My own. I’m thinking of writing it up mostly because I like the decreases.
Yarn: Cascade 220 Superwash, about half a skein
Needles: US 7/4.5
I made this hat for Joe, the boyfriend, because the previous hat I made him was acrylic and did not cover his ears. Since he only wears it in the snow (I swear, it’s like he doesn’t cold–it’s a curse, being a knitter dating such a person), earflaps are a good thing. I can’t imagine he’ll wear it often, but at least I know that he will if it’s cold enough. And that he likes it. : )
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: I love Cascade Yarns. This was my first time using the 220 Superwash (even though I’ve had it in the stash since probably June), and I LOVE it. It’s a little pricey for me to use a lot (poor college student, you know), but it is all kinds of soft. And superwash! It was so wonderful to knit with. And I have half the ball left. Not sure what I’m going to make yet, but whatever it is will be enjoyable.
And as for my pattern: As I said, I’m considering writing it up and offering it as a free/cheap (like a dollar or two cause I’m a college student and am poor. See above note about poorness) pattern. Yarn: 100-150 yards worsted weight in MC and 30 yards in CC
Needles: US 8/5 mm dpns and 16″ circular needle
You will also need a tapestry needle and a stitch marker.
Finished size: To fit 20″-23″ head (should fit most adult heads)

Yarn: Cascade Eco Wool that I’ve been using for EVERYTHING and also some handdyed reclaimed sweater wool
Needles: US 8/5mm dpns and bamboo circ.
So it came out a little large, but I, at least, am pleased with that because that means it covers more of my head in the dead of winter when it’s actually snowing (so like… late January) or even if it’s just slightly chilly. Also, I seriously love this color I dyed. I used tie-dye over last winter to get this lovely mottled pink-purple. Yay! I only had a little bit, and it turned out perfect for the color work. Yay color work!
Anyway, to get some practice with pattern writing (and because I thought someone might like to make it), I’m writing up the pattern. It has a colorwork chart. It’ll probably be up here in the next couple of days as it’s finished, I just have to flip the chart upside down. And I’m LAZY. Or, actually, we’ll say busy cause it’s almost finals week and I should be studying. Yes. BUSY. Heh.
