Okay, so technically it’s late on Tuesday morning. Shhh.
Anyway, what I picked up at the Holiday Fair I went to on Saturday. Some yarn and some fabric and also a skirt (which I don’t have pictures of). Unplanned Peacock was there, and I splurged (really, since it was more expensive than I’ve ever spent on one skein of yarn) on some sock yarn in the delightfully phoenix-y color solar:
I also picked up a lovely skein of sport weight alpaca for five bucks (I KNOW):
And two silk bells weighing about 38g total, even though I’ve never spun silk before:
And finally, at one of the tables selling fabric, there were two bins of free scraps of fabric. Some of them were really large pieces (like a yard), and I scored a couple:
The brocade will probably be a corset (with several muslins). Not sure about the other ones though.
Sneaking in a picture-less post under the wire to accomplish another day of NaBloPoMo.
Today was spent at the Manassas/Prince William County Fairgrounds for the Holiday Fair. There were lots of people dressed up in Renaissance garb (I was basically the only one NOT in garb; I was wearing jeans and a long sleeved shirt), tons of vendors, and lots of lovely things to buy.
I was pleased that there were several fibery vendors, including Unplanned Peacock. They had a TON of yarn (almost all of which was basically out of my price range). I splurged on a nice skein of sock yarn (pictures tomorrow).
At a different both, I bought a hank of really nice alpaca yarn (sport weight two-ply for FIVE DOLLARS) and at another booth, I bought two silk caps to spin. I’ve never spun silk before so it should be… an experience. I also bought a floofy skirt and some knee socks (pictures of all these tomorrow, as I said).
I also got basically a bajillion orders for shark mittens over the last couple of days, so I’ll be knitting them until I die.
Before I go into today’s subject matter, I just want to note that my shark mittens were featured on the Meet Me at Mike’s blog! And I’m super chuffed about it. : )
Anyway, so I got the yarn yesterday for another WWFY swap that I am super excited about. I’m knitting for Stuffycat, and she sent six skeins of Bugga:
The brown that’s partially balled will be made into Cookie A’s Monkey socks and the other two will be made into Kitty Hawk, a steampunk-errific set of mitts and a hat.
In return, I received the following three skeins of yarn:
And I already know what I’m going to knit with them. The blue will be made into Viper Pilots and the other two are for my own set of Kitty Hawk mitts and hat. Yay!
I have a bunch of other things I have to knit before I can start any of these (including THREE PAIRS of shark mittens I got orders for yesterday), but I can’t wait to be able to knit with the Bugga. It’s super soft and lovely. And now I have three!
I recently participated in a frugal themed swap–saving money through resuable items. I received my package from my partner today, and it was full of wonderful things:
She sent me a great laptop sleeve, yarn made from t-shirts (which I’ll probably crochet into a rug), a bunch of cloth napkins, and some nommy bath stuff:
Some sugar scrub, a soap, and a tub of chapstick, which I love and is fantastic. I have a serious addiction to chapstick, and this one is peppermint flavored and it makes my lips tingly. : )
I sent my swap package out this morning, so after my partner receives, I can show what I sent. And I still have to take pictures of the Improvisation Mitts, which I hope to do tomorrow.
Another NaBloPoMo day accomplished.
So I recently arranged a WWFY (Will Work for Yarn, a swap group on Ravelry) trade to knit a couple of things. : ) I received the yarn yesterday with all the other packages.
Here’s the yarn I was sent to knit with:
JoJoLand Rhythm for an Aviatrix baby hat, Claudia Hand-Painted Merino for a Cloud Bolero, and Cashmerino Aran for some Improvisation mitts.
Here is the yarn I received in payment:
That’s Jaggerspun Zephyr wool/silk dk. I absolutely cannot wait to knit it up–it’s GORGEOUS. Not sure what I’m going to knit with it yet, but whatever it is, it will be gorgeous. Yay.
Tomorrow: A knitting FO, probably. I knit like the wind.
I received four packages in the mail today.
One of them was full of WWFY goodness that I’ll show you tomorrow.
One of them was a couple of skeins of Cascade Eco that I ordered in order to knit more shark mittens on commission.
One of them was some black 12 gauge wire for making knit headbands:
and one of them was an early (by exactly a month) birthday present from my sister:
That’s right; I am now the proud owner of my very own digital yarn scale. It’s the one from Knit Picks that weighs up to 2000 g and down the to half gram. I can now divide my sock yarn exactly in order to knit socks two at a time. Yay! I’m super excited. I may go measure all my yarn scraps so I know how much I have…
Day two of fall break was today! I spent the late afternoon playing in the Rappahannok river with Sarah (unfortunately, I did not take any pictures).
I spent the morning sorting and photographing all of my yarn stash. I spent much of the evening loading it all in the Ravelry (and watching Dollhouse). It’s all in there now, so I’ll be able to see what I have without going to dig through it all. Before I put all the yarn back in the bins (sorted by weight), I spread it all out on the floor and took a picture:
The bottom half is all worsted weight and the top half is lace/fingering/sport weights. The middle (and the very top row) is mostly yarns I’ve frogged from sweaters. Right above that off to the left side is sock yarn. I counted, and I have enough sock yarn for 25 pairs of socks (including one from my scraps, in the plastic bag there).
There are a couple of things missing from the picture, like the yarn for my Halloween cape and bonus sock yarn I got in the mail the other day. It also (obviously) doesn’t include my spinning fiber, though that’s all loaded on Ravelry. I also don’t have pictures of my acrylic yarn stash and it’s not in Ravelry since I don’t have brand names and such for it. It’s mostly assorted band-less balls a friend bought me at an estate sale. Useful for blankets and amigurumi as well as for swap partners that won’t handwash wool and don’t mind acrylic.
I like seeing it all laid out in the picture here. Maybe I will indeed have enough to knit next year when I’m a poor, starving college grad.
So I recently participated in a swap on Craftster wherein I swapped kits to make a craft with other people. It was sort of round-robin style. The kit I made (a drop spindling kit) went to sugaree. I included a how to spindle pamphlet, a little sample of my early handspun, a drop spindle, some fiber, and a drawstring bag to hold it all:
The bag:
and the fiber:
I included about 30g of alpaca fiber and about 125g of domestic wool top (from the pound I ordered when I started spinning) that I dyed. I call the colorway “Ocean Madness (It’s No Excuse for Ocean Rudeness)”.
The kit I received in return was from ChrisSews and it was for making jewelry. She sent so much cool stuff!
Here’s everything:
Tons of findings:
Tons of beads:
as well as instructions and materials to make these earrings, based off some on my wists:
I can’t wait to make the second earring so I can wear them, but I don’t think I’ll really be able to until I go back to school. There’s a lot of little parts and I don’t want to lose anything, so I’ll wait until I’m settled in my apartment at school and have a work space that belongs to me.
First thing’s first: The winner of the fish earrings!
Congratulations to comment number one: Siobhan! I’ll be emailing you for your address!
Now for some thrift scoring. I went to the Goodwill Outlet this morning with my mother and for a grand total on NINE DOLLARS, I scored all of the following sweaters:
Three are lamb’s wool, one’s wool and angora, one’s cotton and linen and one (the green one) is cotton and silk. The cotton ones will probably become tank tops of some sort, though I’ll probably over dye the yarn. The green one with blue to get teal because although it’s a lovely color, my Green Leaves tank is in almost the exact same shade of green. The wool ones I may dye and either sell or have another giveaway on the blog because while I do love yarn (especially cheap yarn), I am running out of room to store it.
So several months ago, I bought this merino fiber:

Pretty. I spun about half of it into this:
Also pretty. : ) My first attempt at thick and thin, and let me tell you, it’s not as easy as you’d think. Spinning a single is hard enough (balance enough twist to keep it together with not overtwisting it) but also once you get used to spinning thin, it’s difficult to get back to spinning thick. Plus I always had the nagging feeling that it was too dense (so I wasn’t getting enough yardage for my dollar) so I had to deal with that also.
I really love how it came out though. There’s not a lot of yardage (only about 60 yards) and the thickest bits are still only around worsted weight and I can’t imagine it’s very sturdy. It’s hella soft though, guys. It’s like a kitten. I love it.
PS: Don’t forget about the contest! Open until Friday! There’s not a lot of entries, so odds are good!
